Prince Andrew Reportedly Still Set to Receive State Funeral Despite Title Removal

Just when it seemed Prince Andrew, formerly known as Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, had lost virtually all royal privileges, reports suggest he is still slated to receive a high-profile ceremonial funeral upon his death.

Detailed Funeral Plans in Place

Despite King Charles removing Andrew’s remaining royal titles in October 2023, he reportedly remains on a confidential government list of royals entitled to such arrangements. These meticulously planned events, known as 'bridge plans,' are named after famous UK bridges; Queen Elizabeth II’s was Operation London Bridge. Andrew’s plan could involve a funeral at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, followed by burial at the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, a secluded estate within Windsor.

Royal Navy officers may even be asked to volunteer as pallbearers, a nod to Andrew’s past naval service.

Backlash and Criticism Emerge

The news has unsurprisingly drawn considerable criticism. Conservative MP Joe Robertson stated that public funds “should not bankroll” the funeral, while former minister Norman Baker argued Andrew is now a “commoner” and undeserving of a royal send-off.

Victims of Jeffrey Epstein Condemn the Plans

Nine survivors of Jeffrey Epstein, the late disgraced sex offender with whom Andrew maintained a friendship, released a statement through their lawyer, Spencer Kuvin, asserting that “Taxpayers should not ever be funding a funeral for a private individual. No public money should be used to benefit him during death. It's an embarrassment to the Crown.” Lawyer Gloria Allred, representing over twenty survivors, also condemned the plans, questioning why Andrew should receive such an honor given his involvement with Epstein and the message it would send to victims. She further questioned why UK taxpayers should bear the cost of his expenses.

Buckingham Palace has not yet commented on the reported funeral arrangements.
