Wedding trends shift: couples reject the algorithm, crave authenticity
The carefully curated, Instagram-fueled wedding frenzy of summers past is fading fast. As Lynn Easton and Dawson Haynes of Easton Events observe a stark reversal – couples are actively dismantling the algorithmic obsession that dominated the last season – a new wave of design is emerging, prioritizing personal expression over performative aesthetics.

A reaction to the ‘algorithm’
Last summer, wedding planners were navigating the treacherous terrain of ‘activation,’ ‘the shot,’ and ‘party tricks’ designed to appease the algorithm. Now, in 2026, Easton and Haynes are witnessing a deliberate pushback, a conscious rejection of trends and a yearning for weddings that truly reflect the couple’s identity.
“We’ve seen it all, and then some,” says Haynes. “Clients can now articulate precisely what they dislike – the sameness, the relentless pursuit of perfection for the ‘gram.’ It’s a refreshing change.”
Pinterest’s data – a staggering seven billion wedding-related searches and 16.7 billion saved posts in the last twelve months – confirms this shift. Heather Clark, Head of Fashion and Luxury at Pinterest UK, notes, “We’re seeing fatigue around the Instagrammable performance that weddings have been.”
“What’s emerging in 2026 is a move away from trend-led weddings and toward more considered design,” states Sarah Young, founder of Sarah Young Events. “Last year, many weddings felt driven by social media – beautiful, yes, but often repetitive. This year, there’s a palpable sense of intentionality. Couples are prioritizing quality over quantity, and the overall feeling of the day for their guests.”
Shelby Wax, a Vogue Weddings contributor, recounts a recent wedding where the bride and groom, Ingvild Gillet and Connor Hickey, infused 200 candles with a custom scent, a deliberate act of personalization that encapsulated the emerging trend. “It was an editorial campaign in wedding form,” Wax explains. “The goal is to be a reflection of your personal style, not just what photographs well.”
The celebrity wedding scene is also undergoing a transformation. Zendaya’s double marriage (on-screen and off-screen), coupled with the rumored nuptials of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, and Dua Lipa and Callum Turner, signals a broader shift. Zoë Kravitz and Harry Styles’ engagement further fuels this trend, demonstrating a desire for understated elegance.
Mark Niemierko, a London-based luxury wedding planner, observed that last year’s lavish Bezos and Sanchez wedding, while impressive, felt “beige” and “cookie-cutter.” He welcomed the shift, stating, “Less sameness; things need to be lifted.”
But what exactly is lifting these weddings? Pinterest’s research reveals several key trends. Gen Z brides are ditching the ‘classic bride’ aesthetic in favor of bolder styles – dramatic styling, statement accessories, and editorial-inspired beauty looks. Searches for terms like “celestial whimsigoth,” “red veil wedding,” and “black gothic wedding dress” are skyrocketing. Even unexpected trends, such as “two tooth grillz,” are gaining traction.
Beyond aesthetics, the color palette is evolving. Gone are the days of brown dominance; plum, olive, and fig are emerging as the new earthy tones. “Rooted romance” is the defining trend, emphasizing moody, nature-driven themes. Simultaneously, opalite – a shimmering iridescent shade – is capturing attention, offering a playful divergence from the established palette.
Pattern-on-pattern is another key element, with couples embracing individuality through layered textures and tones. “There are no rules,” Easton emphasizes. “The guardrails are down, and we’re seeing the power of personality and preference packed behind each garment selection, down to the last accessory.”
Finally, the influence of vintage inspiration – particularly drawing from iconic films like Love Story – is undeniable. Designers are leaning into archival looks, incorporating details like drop-waist silhouettes and lace detailing. Brands like Jimmy Choo and Vivienne Westwood are capitalizing on this desire for unique, story-driven weddings.
Ultimately, celebrities are driving this shift, moving away from overly-produced events and embracing more intimate, authentic celebrations. As the cost of living rises, couples are prioritizing experiences over extravagance, seeking weddings that truly reflect their personalities and values. The future of weddings, it seems, is decidedly less about the algorithm and far more about genuine expression.”
