Shower smarter: red light therapy now in your daily routine

Forget the extra time and dedicated devices—wellness just got a whole lot easier to integrate into your daily routine. HigherDose, already known for Gwyneth Paltrow-approved wellness tech like sauna blankets and red light face masks, is bringing its light therapy expertise to the bathroom with the launch of its Red Light Showerhead Filter.

A daily ritual, elevated

The concept, according to Jessica Alcalde, VP of Product at HigherDose, is simple: “Wellness works best when it fits naturally into real life.” Recognizing the near-universal habit of showering, Alcalde’s team sought a seamless way to incorporate red light therapy. The shower, often a private and consistent moment, became the ideal setting for full-body exposure. The new fixture delivers wavelengths of 650nm (red) and 850nm (near-infrared) while also boasting a 10-stage water filtration system, tackling everything from chlorine to microplastics.

The promise is compelling: glowing skin, improved scalp health, boosted circulation, elevated mood, and better sleep – all from a shower. But do dermatologists agree? The response is nuanced. While some remain cautious, pointing to potential placebo effects with at-home red light devices, others see genuine promise.

“There is now abundant evidence to suggest that at-home LED devices can significantly improve signs of skin aging,” says Maryam Safaee, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Santa Monica. She highlights the science behind red light’s ability to increase collagen synthesis and decrease MMP, a protein that breaks down collagen, and cites its potential benefits for hair density in those experiencing pattern hair loss.

Dr. Safaee acknowledges that definitive, long-term results are still being observed, but emphasizes the added benefit of the integrated water filtration. “Not only do you get the benefit of filtered water, but also a uniquely-designed LED system engineered for optimal light delivery.”

The experience and the investment

The $599 fixture presents a significant investment, but proponents argue the convenience is unparalleled. Unlike laser caps or panels requiring dedicated time and effort, this showerhead seamlessly integrates into an existing routine. Alan J. Bauman, MD, a hair restoration physician, notes, “The biggest advantage…is effortless, full-body coverage during a routine you already do every day.” He adds that the filtration system further supports skin and scalp health by reducing irritation and buildup—a benefit absent in many other RLT devices.

My own week-long trial yielded a sensory experience more than tangible results – showering under the red glow feels undeniably futuristic, and installation was remarkably straightforward. But the real test will be whether the long-term benefits live up to the hype.

Kristina Collins, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, cautions that the shorter, less concentrated treatment time compared to targeted devices might make it best suited as a supportive tool rather than a primary treatment for significant hair loss. However, the ease of use and combined benefits of light therapy and filtration are hard to ignore.

The verdict: a worthwhile upgrade?

Ultimately, the HigherDose Red Light Showerhead Filter isn’t a magic bullet, but a clever innovation that marries convenience with potential wellness benefits. While the price tag might give some pause, the consistent, full-body exposure and integrated filtration system offer a compelling case for those seeking to elevate their daily shower ritual—and perhaps, their overall well-being. As Dr. Bauman aptly puts it, “It’s uniquely passive and consistent, making daily use extremely easy.”
