L.l. bean revives beloved japan collection amid strong demand
L.L.Bean is expanding its Japan Edition offerings, bringing a curated selection of its sought-after Japanese-inspired apparel to more customers stateside. The brand's foray into the Japanese market in the early 1990s proved surprisingly successful, cultivating a dedicated following among Japanese tourists eager for its outdoorsy staples.
A nostalgic return
The initial venture, beginning with a flagship store in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo in 1992, tapped into a unique demand. Robust mail order sales indicated a strong Japanese fanbase for the Maine-based brand. This year, L.L.Bean is scaling up the Japan Edition, making it available online and at select retail locations across the US, a response to the popularity of last year's pop-up events.
“Last year’s pop-ups were very successful, and customers wanted greater access to the collection, so we expanded its availability this year,” explains Nick Wilkoff, L.L.Bean’s chief marketing officer.
The Japan Edition features a range of items with a distinct aesthetic: boxier silhouettes, oversized fits, and a color palette not always found in the US lineup. Standout pieces include the cropped Roxbury jacket, a vintage tech-wear inspired piece priced at $200, a trout-graphic tee, the Milo anorak, and a Japanese take on the classic Prospect Harbor field coat, retailing for $250.
Wilkoff highlighted the Prospect Harbor hoodie as a “sleeper pick,” praising its blend of style, durability, and versatility. Demand is already high, with items selling quickly. While the future of the Japan Edition remains somewhat opaque, Wilkoff offered a tantalizing hint: “Stay tuned.” The collection’s resurgence underscores the enduring appeal of subtly reimagined Americana.
