ITV's crime thriller Gone aired its season finale last night, revealing the shocking identity of Sarah Polly's killer in a dramatic sit-down confession with DC Annie Cassidy.

However, fans were left underwhelmed by the lack of clues throughout the series, with many expressing their disappointment at the 'random' and 'unsatisfying' ending.

Viewers had been eagerly following the investigation, with Michael Polly, played by David Morrissey, being the prime suspect after his wife's sudden disappearance.

Yet, in a surprising twist, it was revealed that Rory Bowman, the deputy head teacher, was responsible for Sarah's death. The confession came after Annie entered his home in search of evidence, coaxing Rory into detailing their altercation.

A close-up of Rory's hands in a strangling gesture confirmed his guilt, but fans felt the reveal was poorly executed, with many stating there were no real hints throughout the episodes leading up to it.

One frustrated viewer wrote on Reddit: 'Enjoyed it but found the ending, out of nowhere, to be completely unsatisfying.' Another concurred: 'The ending felt a bit…random? Unsatisfying?'

This lack of foreshadowing has led some to question the purpose of watching the previous episodes, with hopes for a potential second series dwindling.
