Us fashion industry collapses: independent designers face mounting crisis

The American fashion landscape is in freefall, as a wave of bankruptcies – including Matches, Farfetch, and Ssense – exposes the precarious state of independent designers and the systemic failures to support emerging talent.

A bleak four years for american style

Launched in 2022 with promises of bolstering the industry, Fashion Trust US (FTUS) has yet to deliver the robust support its founder, Tania Fares, envisioned. Four years on, the challenges facing independent brands have intensified, exacerbated by a volatile economic climate and a rapidly shifting retail market.

The recent collapses of major online retailers – Matches, Farfetch, and Ssense – underscore the intense pressure on even established brands. Just last year, Saks’ acquisition of Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, forming Saks Global, followed a similar trajectory, restructuring to avoid insolvency. Meanwhile, smaller, independent labels are disproportionately bearing the brunt of these failures, often left unpaid.

Tariffs and limited support fuel the fire

Tariffs and limited support fuel the fire

Adding to the woes, 2025 tariffs dramatically reshaped global supply chains, driving up production costs and squeezing profit margins. The US lacks the institutional support found in cities like Paris and Milan – no government funding and a dearth of effective awards schemes beyond the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, which has provided over $8 million in private grants over the years.

Ftus aims to fill the void

Fares’s FTUS is attempting to bridge this gap, focusing on brands between two and seven years in operation, a deliberate choice to prioritize experience over youthful exuberance. The organization is bolstered by a robust board, scrutinizing Business structures and financials to identify brands with genuine potential. This year’s $600,000 prize pool – split among four awards – represents a significant investment, supported by donations, gala sponsorships, and Google’s backing.

A shift towards mentorship and strategic guidance

However, Fares emphasizes that financial support alone is insufficient. “Designers need guidance just as much,” she asserts. FTUS provides access to a mentorship scheme led by executive search firm Bond Creative MGMT, pairing designers with experienced C-suite executives for tailored advice. Diotima’s Rachel Scott highlighted this, noting that the program’s impact extends far beyond immediate funding, fostering a vital community and providing crucial strategic direction.

Rising competition and evolving consumer demand

Lii’s Zane Li, the winner of the ready-to-wear award, credited the trust and mentorship for his success. Ashlynn’s Ashlynn Park, Advisry’s Keith Herron, and AnOnlyChild’s Maxwell Osborne and Kristy Chen – all established brands – echoed this sentiment. Even those with prior awards, like Park, recognized the need for a broader network and strategic support. The competition is fierce, particularly with the rise of celebrity dressing and the increasing sophistication of online style sleuths.

A new era for american fashion

The shift to Los Angeles for the annual FTUS ceremony reflects a strategic effort to establish its own foothold in the industry, capitalizing on the city’s robust stylist community – including figures like Jamie Mizrahio and Karla Welch, both on the FTUS board. Despite the challenges, FTUS is witnessing a surge in applications, exceeding 650 this year, demonstrating a growing awareness and desire for support among American designers. The organization’s success hinges on cultivating a valuable platform, one that genuinely fuels brand growth and attracts further investment.

Looking ahead: a new chapter for emerging talent

With a track record of supporting rising stars – Aisling Camps, Charles Harbison, and Rachel Scott – FTUS is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of American fashion. The program’s focus on strategic guidance, combined with its growing recognition and robust network, offers a beacon of hope for independent designers navigating an increasingly complex and competitive landscape.
